Now don't get me wrong, I do believe that our defensive roster not great by any means. That being said, look at what Wommmack was working with. Not much depth at all, especially on the DL. Senquez, Hilton, and Robert were the only real stand put players that we had back then. Elston and Prewitt were not any better than Hartsfield and Dasher. Undersized and slow LBs, and we had one of the best defenses' in the country.

Wommack's guys bought in, played hard, were in the right position, and in the right play calls. I believe our team now is bought in. You can see that from the effort that they play with. Now we just need a coach to put them in the right positions and make the correct play calls.

Those guys played with a serious chip on their shoulder though. That was one of the harder hitting defenses I’ve seen. Mike Hilton would tackle you in the dick and drive you back 5 yards. Unfortunately they let a couple of games get by them. I don’t see anyone on our defense who plays with the heart many of those guys played with.

All that I can think of with Wommack was his inability to adapt to 2015 Arkansas's offense. Sitting the DB's 10-15 yards off the WR or TE, resulting in a 8+ yard gain every play.

That 2014 defense was good in spite of Wommack, not because of him. He coached like he was in his retirement years already in 2015 and 2016. With that said, he is/was light years better than McGriff. Unfortunately, Wommack didn't like recruiting and McGriff apparently feels like it's below him now that he's a DC.

McCready made a good point on a previous podcast. In the SEC West, a coaching staff member needs to be either a) a great coach or b) a great recruiter or c) both. Ole Miss has too many high paid charity cases that are neither (a), (b), or (c). Complete deadweight. Don't be surprised if Cutcliffe 2.0 doesn't make the necessary staff changes. Ole Miss's football staff has a bad case of the dead sea effect. The better elements of the staff leave for other opportunities leaving the deadweight that no one wants to stay here indefinitely.

The lack of momentum behind the program (contrary to Vitter's statement) makes Ole Miss a tough sell. High school kids are dumb and believe that they're better than every other kid that plays their position. They would much rather go to Bama thinking they'll "be the man", pad Bama's depth chart, ride the pine for four years and get a few championship rings, than go to Ole Miss for "immediate playing time".
