Jimmy Johnson and Nascar. Starting in 2005 Jimmy ripped off 5 championships in a row. Something that had never been done before in Nascar. He won 35 races during that stretch, roughly 20% of the total. The problem with that is/was that fans became complacent with the product, and both attendance and viewership dropped in the sport. It put the sport on a trajectory that it has yet to recover from. (some people will point to the recession of 2008 effecting attendance numbers. And it's true that hurt. But the recessions should have nothing to do with people staying at home and watching TV sets.)

Yeah...I'm gonna go ahead and call BS on this one. People love to watch sports dynasties. You saw this with the Bulls in the 90s, Tiger Woods in the early-00s, and the Patriots and Warriors of the present. NASCAR killed itself with its numerous changes to the process of producing a cup champion - most of those being unnecessary changes - as well as its failed efforts to transform itself into an international brand. The recession merely hastened the league's demise.
