Regarding conference realignment and the playoff - what about this plan?

Here’s your drawing board… but I am thinking bigger – though this plan will solve the scheduling problem. Feel free to think I am crazy and shoot holes in the thought process. And yes, I know it will never happen.


Conferences
-----------

**There will be six major conferences of 12 teams each, each conference will have two 6 team divisions. Let’s call these the “Champ 6 Conferences”. The teams currently classified as “FCS” and “FBS” will retain their groupings based on competition and attendance. The Champ 6 conferences will be:

****ACC (ATL – Clemson, NC State, Louisville, Fl St, Wake Forest, Boston College COASTAL – Miami, Va Tech, Duke, Ga Tech, Pitt, Virginia)

****SEC (W - Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU, Miss St, Mississippi, Arkansas E – Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, S. Carolina, Vanderbilt, Auburn)

****Big10 (E – Ohio St, Penn St, Michigan, Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland W – Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan St, Purdue, Iowa, Minnesota)

****Pac10 (N – Washington, Stanford, Wash St, Oregon, California, Boise St S – USC, Utah, Arizona, Ariz St, UCLA, Colorado)

****Big 12 (S – Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor N – Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa St, Kansas St, Wyoming, Colorado St)

****XXX (the best of the MWC, CUSA, independents, conference culls, etc) (E – West Virginia, Notre Dame, Central Florida, Florida Atlantic, South Florida, Navy W – BYU, Memphis, Houston, Air Force, Fresno St, San Diego St


****Relegated out (see below!) or just outside looking in: N. Carolina, Tennessee, Syracuse, Kansas, Illinois, Oregon St, Marshall, Louisiana Tech, Ohio, SMU, Temple, Troy, Utah St


Scheduling
----------

**NO Independents will be allowed to play in the Championship playoff, they must be part of a Champ 6 conference. A team MUST be a member of one of these conferences to be included in the national championship playoff. No exceptions. Therefore, the national champion will come from a pool of 72 conference teams. Period.

****Each team will play a 12 game schedule.

****Each team will play all other division rivals on a home-and-home basis, that’s 5/12 games.

****Each team will have home-and-home games from the other conference division, including one permanent rival other plus two rotating games, that’s another 3/12 games.

****Each team will have four out-of-conference games, for the final 4/12 games.
------Two of these games are solely at the discretion and up to the scheduling of the team. These may be within the Champ 6 conferences or out of the Champ 6 conferences or even FBS opponents. This will allow for more than 6 home games if a host team is willing to pay for an opponent, it will also allow for traditional rivalries [Example: Notre Dame vs USC]
------The other two games will be from out-of-conference Champ 6 opponents and these will be scheduled independently by the newly created College Football Scheduling Czar. These games will be scheduled by position on a two year cycle, where the selection positions will be changes. One game will be a top 3 division opponent (1-2-3 standing) and the other will be a bottom 3 division opponent (4-5-6). [Example: 2018 - SEC-W1 Auburn plays Pac12-N2 Washington at home, and Big12-S5 Kansas St away. 2019 – Auburn would play at Washington and host Kansas St. Recalculate for 2020-21. And so forth.]
------Therefore, a minimum of 10 games will occur against Champ 6 opponents.
------Each conference shall determine a conference champion via a conference championship game between its two division leaders.

**Teams who are outside of the Champ 6 conferences will have a chance to improve due to relegation on a two year cycle. Every two years, the lowest rated average final standing team of each conference regardless of division will be relegated out for non-performance. The top six teams not in a Champ 6 conference will enter on a regional basis. [Example: For 2018-19 based on 2016-17 performance - Tennessee, you’re out – and Oregon St just got replaced by Boise State.]
****Relegated out or just outside looking in: N. Carolina, Tennessee, Syracuse, Kansas, Illinois, Oregon St, Marshall, Louisiana Tech, Ohio, SMU, Temple, Troy


National Championship
---------------------
**There will be an 8 team playoff for the national championship.
**The playoff teams will include all six conference champions regardless of final won-loss record plus two at large teams to be determined by polls/voters/committee/computer/whatever.
**This will only take three weeks to play out, there is no real impact to the otherwise normal bowl schedule. No skipped weeks once the playoff starts.


Key Features
------------
Here’s what is different:

**Schedule considerations are almost rendered irrelevant – by using a mostly fixed opponent schedule, nobody can complain about cupcakes or advantages. This is a very fair system.
**Teams will play opponents they have never played before or in a very long time. This will create huge fan interest as chances occur to visit entirely new venues and locations.
**This system is actually more fair to the “have nots”. BYU is the only team in the last 40 years to even have a chance to play for the national championship outside the “traditional” Champ 6 teams. The relegation system infuses the process with fresh teams every two years – fresh rivalries, fresh travel, fresh recruiting grounds. You want a chance? Play your way in. If you don’t perform, you’re back out.
**This system is definitive with very little argument about whether a team deserved to be in the playoff. Just win your conference championship game.
