I have a problem helping people that can afford to smoke two cartons a week but can’t afford food for their kids. I still help the kids but it’s a hard thing to do sometimes. If there are no kids and they are able bodied I sometimes decline them simply because I know them and I know they wasted their money on lotto tickets and smokes

We have a band of professional beggars here in West Memphis of all places. They park in the same spot at Walgreens. They rotate about 5 people through three corners but if you actually pay attention to them instead of just handing them change from your car window you can identify who they are.

Some of the professional panhandlers can make as much as a thousand a week in a good location if not more.

Those folks, I have zero sympathy for.

Now, your true homeless person who is completely lost mentally or so addicted they can't function in normal society... those folks we need to help because they cannot help themselves. If for no other reason then the quaint homeless guy becomes less quaint when he's sleeping in your doorway and using your backyard as his toilet.

Though, granted, I'd help them by reopening sanitariums and putting them in there. Make it well regulated and at least they are getting some help.

Hot Springs had a similar group that would meet at the Albert Pike Walmart.

I'll spin signs for you. I'm gonna need weekends off, $15 an hour, and a competitive benefits package though.

not sure about the competitive benefits package.

The starting wage is 20/hr fwiw.

If you are really good, you can get paid 70-100hr

I went there pre-franchising, but they were still big and they still got a lot of heat from people.

These same debates/accusations occurred about taking care of their own community. Finally, during one service or something like that, they outlined what all they do in northwest Arkansas. It was staggering, I had no idea how much they actually did.

I have a lot of issues with that church, but they do more locally than people give them credit for. I figure the biggest reason is that if they bragged about it, they'd take heat for that too.

That said, I of course won't defend private lakes and crosses seen from space.

Actually, approximately half of those people suffer from mental illness and yes, addiction. They need our compassion, not derision. Telling them to just "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" isn't the answer. It's not just laziness, they need help.

Spoken like a liberal.

I believe it. Walgreen is just down the street from Walmart and Kroger's here and right at this hugely screwed up underpass with four or five different corners to stand on.

Plus, this Walgreen's has an attached discount liquor store that people drive over to shop at from Memphis. Its a beggar's paradise.

When I was night shift down there, I would actually get to see them dropped at the off-ramps in the morning. A 5 year old SUV would pull up, set a couple at Airport and drive off and back up the bypass toward Central.

When that ring broke up, there was a young couple that would bring there 2 year old out with them. In the summer.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. Screw ‘em.

What the hell does what I said have to do with politics? So you’re opposed to compassion, mercy, kindness, humanity, mercy. At least you own it.

Yeah, that's exactly what I implied.

What I'm fed up with is people making excuses for others shite head like behavior. I'm tired of non-productive members of society being catered to and being allowed to affect (negatively) productive members of society.

A lot of these addicts and people that were dealt a not-so-great hand in life have made choices in life that affect each and every one of us (directly and indirectly).

Bottom line is, the majority of these people are pond scum. They don't deserve compassion; they need to be held accountable for the choices that they've made.

Its not a liberal or a conservative thing. Hell, if you want to be cold hearted its not even a compassionate thing to take care of them. Its a common sense thing.

A lot of those addicts are completely off their rocker mentally speaking. Numbing that down with booze or crack or what have you is their way of self medicating. Even if you got them off the hooch they'd still not be able to function in society without medical help. They make poor life choices because they can only make poor life choices.

Its why getting them off the street is the best solution. Which will require spending money.

I know. I know. "I won't pay an extra 100 bucks in taxes to help them! I'd much rather they wander the streets like feral animals and break into my home and steal all my stuff. Maybe even shank me if I'm really lucky!"

We wind up paying a lot more in the long term by having them wandering the streets in their completely messed up state of mind. Theft, property damage, assaults, and treating them at the ER for anything whatsoever that goes wrong with them, that is the cost we pay for keeping them on our streets.

I say we'd pay a lot less if put 'em in an asylum where they can get treatment. Not only have you done a good deed... you don't have a homeless person taking a dump on your new car because he thinks God told him too.

The best way to help a nonproductive member of society is not to turn them loose and then pay for the damage they cause. Its to put them somewhere to get their mind right so maybe they can be a productive member of society again. And, at the very least, keep them from eating the family cat.
