After Bobby Petrino took Arkansas to their promised land of consistent mediocrity, tragedy struck Razorback nation. The one competent coach that was somehow convinced to come to Fayetteville temporarily lifted Arkansas above consistent bottom-feeder status, and then tragedy struck.

Luckily for Arkansas, there was one man who could not be shamed in to avoiding the Arkansas job, and that man was John L. Smith.

Arkansas would go on to post a dismal 4-8 record including losses to UL-Monroe, Rutgers, and a 10-58 loss to Texas A&M. The low point came when old John had a presser after a devastating loss to Alabama where he emphatically told the media that everyone just needs to “smile”. After a season long full of humiliation, Arkansas and John L. Smith agreed to part ways.

Facebook moms paving the way to hiring Orgeron is pretty embarassing, and Ole Miss has definitely made their run, but I honestly can't see a more embarassing story than how all of this unfolded.

Wasn't Arkansas in the top10 when they lost to Louisiana Monroe? I remember losing my shite when they scored the winning touchdown

I can’t stand John L as much as any Razorback fan, but there was a story lost behind the “smile” comment. That week he had declared bankruptcy d/t bad real estate deals and actually attended his younger brothers funeral the same day as that press conference.

Remember in 2011 when they thought Jordan Jefferson ripped out his heart to make fun of the Arkansas player who had a heart attack the week before when Jefferson did his Superman celebration?

A person from Louisiana talking about Arkansas accents, this is rich.

John L wasn't a bad guy but this instance should go down in sec lore as one of those "perfect storm" moments of just how bad it can really get.
All because mercenary Petrino put his whore on the company payroll.

The spring of 2012 was a fun time to listen to Finebaum. I had been laid off and was doing some work on my deck and had it on as background noise. The whole Louisville vs Kentucky matchup in the Final Four, John L Smith and Petrino drama at Arkansas, and of course the occasional dig at LSU for 21-0.

Oh man, how I loved having John L. Smith as head coach at Arkansas. It was a fun time, following what Houston Nutt did to Ole Miss the previous year.

Yea, Jeff Long screwed that program beyond recognition. He should have been fired as soon as he decided to meet with the BOT regarding Petrino.

In our defense John L. Smith had some great success at his other coaching stops before Arkansas, in order to maintain the system we had with all of the returning players we kept him and it honestly wasn't a bad move, it didn't turn out well, but the man was a proven commodity before falling out at Michigan St
