I'd say it was bigger than the nerds and even the Gators.

Each of us obviously won NC's to start the decade and the '82 Labor Day game was intense and wired as I've ever seen a crowd at Athens. The '84 Butler kick was also an unbelievably game
Just about every game that decade was decided in the 4th qtr8

We were also going head to head with them in recruiting and there was multiple accusations of buying recruits on both sides.

Once again,I'd put up there with
any national rivalry during that decade.

At the time, that was probably one of the most hyped up games UGA had ever played in. You had the previous 2 national title winners squaring off to open the season, and Herschel was the biggest name in CFB and clemson was the only team to essentially shut him down the year before in clemson. If memory serves, ABC wanted to air that game so badly that they actually paid to install new lights at Sanford so they could air it at night.

I'm not sure.I believe it was in the plans but that game perhaps speeded up the project.

It was the biggest party I had ever seen in Athens.School had not started but pretty much evertbody was back on campus.Just about all my frat brothers and buddies cancelled vacation plans and headed back to school.Parties started Friday afternoon and lasted til late Monday nt.

My first game as a student was 1984 when we were down 20-3 at halftime to #1 Clemson and Butler kicked the 60yarder to win it.....awesome. Sad thing is that was my first game and best game....I lived in the James Jackson, Wayne Johnson, David Dukes years.

Alabama fans aren't much better, which is pathetic since they won another title. They are truly sore abour recruiting. Just a couple of examples from Tidefans.

"Not sold on annual SEC showdowns of Bama/Georgia either. Florida hit a home run in hiring Mullen. In my opinion, Mullen will challenge for the east an may overtake Kirby by 2019 or 2020."

"I'm not sure there is anything Smart wouldn't do to get a recruit. Things may turn out the same."

"It worked for him this time around.............but now he will have the same done to him by Pruitt, Mullen, Dabo and a few others. The shoe will be on the other foot from now on, and we shall see how he likes getting a taste of his own medicine. At one time I would have thought he would be a great coach to come in when Saban retires, but now I wish him no good will...............I'd love to see him succumb to the pressure at UGA that comes when you don't win the NC or the SEC................to heck with him"

"From everything I can tell Pruitt handled everything the right way, unlike Kirby. I'm with you on the UT-UGA game for the foreseeable future!"

To be fair, no one has ever accused Bama fans of being exceptionally intelligent or possessing great critical thinking skills.

I'm not old enough to know the days when Clemson was our rival. I knew we used to play them yearly but I wasn't born yet. Was it really as much has as we have for UF and GT today?

Alabama fans are extremely butthurt about UGA. They know they can’t just blow us out anymore and now they are losing to us on the recruiting trail. They won’t admit it but the rise of UGA has them worried because the SEC has been owned by them for basically a decade.

We are under fire by tRant. Winning brings enemies/haters. I went into lurk mode to read some of their comments. They're scared. I read in a Barn's thread where they said they are not sold on Kirby as a recruiter and a competent coach. Then made comments like what if Kirby came to AU.........

The Clemson fans talking about cheating makes me laugh. The death penalty was written because of them in the 1980s SMU just got to be the unlucky test subject.

Just my opinion, the reason other fanbases such as Clemson are revving up their animus towards Georgia is because when Mark Richt was in town a lot of fans knew Georgia would fall flat of their faces in big games; things are different in Athens these days. They are fearful of what they see. Kirby's recruiting in Georgia is off the charts. Clemson has always made a living with Georgia players. Kirby is a threat to them in that regard.

I believe he only lost to em 1 time and beat a very good '14 team by 24 pts.

That's great and all but Deshaun Watson still wound up over there. To me the lack of recruiting of Watson was an unforgivable sin. Glad we got things on lock now.

Winning also brings out the horrible posters from our own side. Some of the idiots that post with a super G over there are awful and bring it on themselves.

I guess my 1st mistake was reading some topics over at tigernet, but damn, there are no less than 6 individual threads about UGA and how much better they are at football than us. And that is just today. It's a daily thing to post crap about UGA over there.

A lot of people that post over there are delusional and think their shite doesn't stink. I've been over there a few times over the last few months and I always get a good laugh at some of the crap they come up with. I give Clemson credit, they are on a great run and will be for years to come but their recent success has made a lot of their fans even more annoying.

As far as their posts about Georgia, I think they are a little jealous of the attention and success Georgia is having right now, especially in recruiting. I love the fact we have gotten under their skin and have stolen their spotlight in some aspects.

When did Clemson become a 'rival' to UGA?

There was some great games in the 80's but 39-16-4 tells me that they are not a "rival". Since 1970, Georgia/Clemson has played 25 times with Georgia winning 16 of those games. Clemson's 8 wins during this period is half of their total wins against Georgia. Hell, they even cheated in the 80's and still had a losing record against Georgia during that decade.

We also have a 25 game lead on GT and I imagine our winning % is similar to the Clemson numbers since 70 but they're still a rival.

Since we don't play every year it's hard to say they're a traditional rival but if we started going home and home with em for the next 10 years it would be a rival in every sense of the word.

It's not just clemson, it's everybody in the southeast. Did you ever notice that kind of thing 4 or 5 years ago? Nope. What's different now than it was then? Well that's obvious and everyone can see it. It's fear, plain and simple. People realize what we're becoming and they're terrified of it so they go out of their way to disparge us because they know the time for doing that is drawing to a close, very quickly.

Bump, because it's true.

Clemson sucks...hopefully it will be a long time before they have any success in recruiting Georgia players in the near future.

It was a big deal in the 80s especially since their quarterback came from Athens High School. Somebody Vince Dooley passed on, and won a natty with Dirty Danny Ford
