I think its modern incarnation goes back to undefeated Auburn being left out of the BCS Title game in 2004.

That and all the Southern Cal fans salty over LSU going to the BCSNCG vs Oklahoma. Sucks to suck I guess.

It started when the SEC was super powerful, and jealous fans of schools in other conferences didn't like not getting attention the SEC teams received and started trying to bring down the SEC hype and started talking trash about the SEC whenever they had a straw to grasp on to, and so there was a response by the SEC teams fans from that smack talk.

Come to think of it ... you may be right about that although I'm pretty sure I remember Bama, et al, SEC fans doing it at the '92 Sugar Bowl ... or January '93 I guess it was, vs Miami.

No.

Its Chris Leak and Florida beating Ohio St. that started the SEC chant.

The national media thought 2 Big 10 teams were the best teams in the nation and should have a re-match instead of letting a lowly SEC team into the Championship game.
