Auburn could have hired Kirby after the 2012 season.

Not saying that Kirby is better than Gus but it does look that way. Kirby interviewed at auburn because Pat Dye recommended him for the job. Glad you guys hired Gus honestly. What do you think and what did you think at the time?

Kirby turned down the job. No troll, fact.

ETA- Kirby was offered good jobs every year for ten damn years. He was smart enough to hold out for the right gig.

He wanted the Jawja job for obvious reasons. Had he been hired somewhere else he would've left for the Jawja job, with few exceptions.

Auburn was never a good fit with Kriby. Worked out ok for both I think.

Kirby looks great right now but he also inherited a waaayyyyy better situation than he would have at Auburn (or just about anywhere else). No regrets, worked out for everyone IMO.

The one coach that has proven he can beat Saban, you're happy he was hired? Why?

Auburn interviewed Kirby. Kirby was never close to getting the job. He wanted more than Auburn was willing to give him........and I'm not talking about money.

I don't understand why so many people think that Gus isn't a great hire.
In 5 years against the toughest conference in football:
1) 2 SEC championship appearances
2) National championship appearance
3) 2 NY6 appearances
4) 2-3 against in state rival and one of the greatest dynasties in college football.

There have been mistakes, yes, but he's a few plays away from a national championship.
Also, there's not another coach in the SEC that has beaten Saban once, he's done it twice and this year pretty convincingly. He has been stubborn as a HC, but toward the end of the year it really seemed that some growth and changes were made.

No thanks. I'm not a Gus fan, but Kirby is McElwain 2.0.

Let's slow our roll before we consider Kirby the 2nd coming of Sabear. Sabear would never lose to AU 40-17 -- he wouldn't lose to ANYONE by that margin.

Kirby is going to have to show he can be as consistent as Saban in winning every game he should and when losing, losing only in tight games.

That said, I wanted Gus more at the time because I felt a defensive head coach would just lead us back to the Tubershell days of mediocre offense. I wouldn't have cried if Kirby were hired, but I think everything worked out for the best for him and everyone else.

Auburn didn't want him to coach for Bama in the NCG. In all likelihood he would have left us for UGA if they wanted him so it's not really a loss IMO.

Both Gene Chizik and Gus started stronger than Kirby. Now, he may very well prove to be a better coach than both of them… But hold your horses a bit until that shakes out.

In Auburn's defense, there had to have been some concern about hiring a "Georgia guy" who could leave them at any time to go back to his alma mater. Losing a HC to one of your two biggest rivals is never a good situation, so Auburn was probably wise to avoid it.

I'd personally take Kirby. However, let the record show that what Kirby has done in his first two seasons is no different than what Gus did in his first two seasons at Auburn.... so far at least.

I'd say Kirby's future outlook (Year 3 and beyond) is looking much brighter. But Auburn did just win the SEC West in Gus' 5th season. Certainly he's proven to be a quality HC.
