Bama: Rushing Leaders

With their abundance of talented running backs, isn’t it odd that Hurts leads the team with 85 rushing attempts. Harris averages 8.5 ypc but averages less than 10 carries per game. Any theories on this? I know RPO has changed college football, but this seems odd. Is Bama trying to prepare Hurts to possibly become an NFL qb or are they doing what Meyer did to Tebow...using his athleticism and not giving a crap about his development as a qb

They're trying to win games...
Hurts running helps them do that.

Harris was a non event last night. Hurts scrambles is Bamas run offense

Maybe that’s why UGA hasn’t won anything in almost 40 years?
Saban’s job is not to prepare QBs for the NFL.
I am happy with Saban’s philosophy.

No- I think it's stupid he doesn't get more carries. Bo isn't the same to me as he was in the last stretch of games last year. Harris has deceptive speed and power, with great vision. It kills me we never truly commit to the run with him.

Their RBs were a combined 22 for 75 against LSU last night.

A good chunk of Hurts' rushes are scrambles and sacks. Just off the top of my head it seems that his usage in the designed run game has decreased over the course of the season.
I couldn't tell you why Harris isn't getting more carries. Part of his season numbers being so low is just that we usually have backups in early in the 3rd. But even against FSU and LSU he only got 9 carries each.

Bama is not an NFL prep school. Nick Saban doesnt recruit people because he can develop them into an NFL talent. His purpose in recruiting and coaching is to win at Bama.
They have multiple running backs that rotate in and out of the game.
The main reason Hurts has more carries is, he touches the ball on every snap, hes an efficient runner and he will take off if the defense leaves a big enough gap.
TL/DR Saban develops championship teams not NFL players.

First of all, their job is to win. Preparing him for a different style of play down the road is secondary.
Second, why would it seem odd to you that he leads the team in attempts? Not only do they sometimes run option plays, Hurts doesn't share playing time, unlike the RBs. The ball starts in Hurts' hands on every single play. Then you add in all the rush attempts and yards that come as a result of passing plays where he got flushed from the pocket.
Add it up...option plays, 4 RBs sharing the carries, an athletic passer that makes big plays when he's flushed from the pocket...it would be odd if he didn't lead the team in carries.
