It is impossible for Notre Dame to finish 11-1 and for the ACC to produce an undefeated champ.

Notre Dame plays Miami.

If Notre Dame finishes 11-1, they are in. No matter what. They would go over a 1-loss ACC champ. Even Clemson.

I wonder if it comes nut cutting time, the committee Unofficially lumps ND in with the ACC. If ND runs the table, they are the de facto ACC champ as far as the playoff goes. Unless both are undefeated, I don't see ND and the ACC champ getting in.

I was talking more conceptually on that point

a 1 loss ND will typically get a better shake than a 1 loss conference champ; especially Big 12 and PAC 12 (not counting USC, who plays ND every year)

ACC MIGHT have pulled even with ND because of the recent national championships from Clemson& FSU - plus Miami is a strong draw

the playoffs are as much (more) about ratings as they are about what is "fair"

Yep. If ND finishes the season 11-1, they will have the best resume of any 1 loss teams.. Wins against USC, Miami, Michigan State, NC State and Stanford. And a 1 point loss to UGA.
