They’re not any different. It’s a giant myth, perpetuated to prop up a university that is literally not good at anything.

This. And oxford is not this Mecca in the middle of Mississippi where you are handed 100 bucks to enter and everyone is high society.

What ole miss fans are exceptionally good at.. and it should be required reading for anyone in marketing.. is bragging on themselves and keeping a hive mind mentality. Well that and keeping crushing debt in order to look the part.

After a while people just start believing it. Worked with the front Freeze put up didn't it?

It's that cotton field, Delta culture. Kind of a desperate "we're fancy even though we live in a shithole" thing. The movie "The Help" is a good starter for understanding the culture. "We're rednecks but we're not white trash". It's endemic to the small agricultural communities in Arkansas east of Little Rock, too. Everybody's "deddy" comes "from money" and don't dare question it or look at the balance sheet.

Oxford is two square blocks of quaint little town square, surrounded by miles in every direction of strip malls and crappy student duplexes and apartments.

Context is important, though. It might be the best place in Mississippi.
