I mean I'm not crazy right? There has been plenty of times with big enough gaps that you scratch your head and ask, "why didn't he just run straight ahead?"

To me this would help the offense very much. It would add one more threat on offense. I'm not talking Johnny Football here, but simple situational awareness and speed.
