The reason was that he refused to bring pressure late in games. He would only rush 3-4 and keep his secondary in a soft zone 10 yards off the ball. This gives the opposing qb time to make his reads and basically concedes the short 10 yd out patterns to the offense, you know, the most time effective play during a 2 minute drill.
Notice that the one bad play by UCLA was when Chavis brought a blitz. The problem was, right after that, he went right back to the prevent lite and it cost them like it so often cost us.

Give him 4 or 5 first rounders, a couple all pro players, and NFL starters all over the two deep and he'll give you a top 10 defense. For a modest fee
