Thanks to Les Miles' mercy, Ole Miss was spared its worst loss in 81 years Saturday night.
The top-ranked Tigers, leading 52-3 and possessing the ball at the Ole Miss 1-yard-line with five minutes left, took a knee on four successive plays and turned the ball over on downs with three minutes left.
Had LSU gained the one yard and scored a touchdown, it would have been the worst loss for Ole Miss since a 64-0 drubbing against Alabama in 1930. As it was, the loss equaled a 49-0 loss to Georgia in 1974.
"That's the first time that's happened to me," Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said. "Les was just trying to be nice right there and I appreciate it. It doesn't make you feel good either way. Les is a good man. He understands."
