Reggie Collier was a great QB and athlete.
The 1980 State team that beat Bama 6-3, lost to USM 42-14 earlier in the season at Scott Field on homecoming no less.
Those USM teams under Bobby Collins in the early '80's had some talent, Sammy Winder, Hanford Dixon, Bud Brown , all future NFL players along with Collier and others were really good.
He was the first Newton, Marshall, Watson QB who could do it all and had a charisma about him as well.
I think the record is pretty clear that the USM game loss was the impetus for the Bear to retire and LSU and Auburn losses had an cumulative effect on his decision.

I even had a shirt that said "I was there when we beat the Bear", sold on campus after the Bama victory. Did not feel much like wearing it after Bryant died though.
