That is actually a myth. Alabama had already begun integrating the football team by 1970. It's just that they were freshmen that year and, per NCAA rules, freshmen could not be part of the varsity squad. So the night Alabama got thrashed by USC in Legion Field, Alabama had future African American players watching from the stands.
