Absolutely. Some Vets are huge snowflakes. When someone thanks me for my service on Memorial day I tell them thank you politely and move on about my day. I dont feel the need to lecture them because, lets face it, what good does it do?

This. I mean holy shite I get awkard af when someone thanks me for my service, but no need to launch into some soliloquy setting them straight on who they should be giving their thanks to
it's the spirit of gratitude that matters. Just move on.
