This isn't about title counts it's about flying a banner at your stadium that you were the best team in a year you were demonstrably not the best team.

So Michigan State and Texas should not claim those years? What about teams claiming titles when they didn't play in a bowl game? Do you have a guidebook or website we could check to see what titles you deem worthy?
