It's definitely true in NC that rural areas are much better for barbecue. The top BBQ counties in NC are Davidson, Pitt, Rowan, Wayne, and Forsyth and only Forsyth has a city of any size in it.

I am a pork BBQ connoisseur and, though it grieves me, I must agree with the Tarhole above.

Particularly towards the coast where vinegar and tomato have been combined to form the base. Wish I could remember the one about 15 miles outside of Chapel Hill, headed back to Charlotte. Best I have ever had.

I've been to some good joints in North Carolina in Lexington and a few other towns but whenever I'm remotely close to Dudley I haul arse to Grady's! That is how it's done.
Edit: back to SC...when you're close to Holly Hill, go to sweatman's. Good BBQ.
