This only works at the bottom rung of management. Managers who do actual work beyond maintaining their personnel and overseeing duties are a joke. They get stuck at these bottom levels because no-one looking to promote you will take you seriously if you try to be part of the team instead of being a boss. you're much better off complaining and showing how an increased payroll is needed than to talk about how you step in to help when you don't have the payroll or personnel in place to get the work done.

No idea how this relates to football, but I hear this kind of thing so often.
