The evaluation period for college coaches to hit the road and scout prospects ends later this month just as college camps are about to get underway.

Let's take a look at what's going on at the running back position for Alabama.

Any commitments?

Alabama does not have a running back committed right now

Spring updates

Alabama had a running back committed for almost a year, but four-star Bainbridge, Ga., back Dameon Pierce recently reopened his recruitment. Look for him to sign elsewhere.

Alabama has re-upped its pursuit of in-state Austin High star Asa Martin, who played at the IMG Academy as a junior. Back in February, Martin said he hadn't heard from Alabama since Mel Tucker was there - more than a year earlier.

Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is a fan of Martin. He got an offer and Daboll saw his spring game. Things could clear up even more for Martin after the first camp from June 4-6.

It's cloudy after Martin. Alabama wants five-star Zamir White, the nation's No. 5 prospect, and has seen him this spring, but he appears to be a Georgia or Clemson lean. Alabama still recruits others, including Florida State commit James Cook.

Alabama likes Mountain Brook running back Harold Joiner, but as a receiver, tight end, safety or linebacker. Joiner sees himself as a future running back.

Bottom line

It's not a priority position unless most of the current six non-senior scholarship backs leave. Alabama will sign just one running back this year. Remember that current back Joshua Jacobs didn't emerge until late January in the 2016 class.
