Looking at linebacker for Auburn in 2018

Our trip last week around the state of Alabama gave us some insight into how many linebackers Auburn plans to take in the class.

Matthew Flint, who holds an Auburn offer and wore a “War Eagle” T-shirt during our interview last week, is one of Auburn’s many linebacker targets in the 2018 class. But he also indicated some uncertainty about space in the class due to the likely limited numbers at the position in this cycle.

Flint said he’s been told the Tigers expect to take only two linebackers in the class, which makes sense considering the youthful depth at the position, including three strong pieces from the 2017 class.

So let’s use this space to examine the five guys who Gus Malzahn, Kevin Steele and Travis Williams will have to choose from in 2018. (Names are in order of, in my opinion, likelihood they land in Auburn’s class). More names could add to the list as Auburn coaches enter the evaluation period — and the “likelihood” of each could change dramatically in short order.

Richard Jibunor isn’t on this list because I expect Auburn will ultimately consider him more of a Buck defensive line prospect than a linebacker, and he’ll be a part of the Tigers’ expected big defensive line haul in 2018.
