Richt won SEC Championships in Year 2 and Year 5. He also took Georgia to a #2 national finish in Year 7.

In his final five seasons he still won 9.8 games per season and finished in the Top 10 twice... also never had fewer than 8 wins in a given year during those last 5 years. But he stopped winning SEC Titles so we fired him.

Richt would have had a lifetime contract at Clemson had he brought Clemson the same amount of success in 15 years.

Fired? No. Saban has built up far too much equity in bringing Alabama so many Titles. But if Bama suddenly goes 8-4 and fails to even win the West for three consecutive seasons, you better bet he'd be hearing it was time for him to retire. I don't even think it would take 3 seasons like that.... probably just 2.

If you know anything about Georgia, you'll know that it was Richt's lack of titles that ultimately led to his firing. How many other schools can say they fired a coach who won 145 games in 15 seasons? Again, Richt won 2 SEC Titles in his first 5 seasons. Fans were happy then.

Richt probably was allowed to hang out too long, but the fact that he had won an SEC Title... not once, but twice... bought him extra time.

There is no way Mark Richt would have ever been fired at Clemson had he brought them the same level of success over 15 years. He would still be coaching there with the stadium named after him.
