Carbureted engines need it for proper fuel air ratio. If it's cold too might run rich or something like that

When it's really cold I idle it for about 20 seconds and then put it in gear (with the brake applied) to drop the rpm's. I'll wait another 20 or so seconds before beginning to drive, slowly, down the driveway.
