Slavery gave poor white southerners someone to look down upon and place beneath themselves on the social ladder. It's a well documented sentiment in the old south.

Additionally, it was part of their culture. They fought to protect this culture.

Yeah. I love how people try to act intelligent and say things like, "ONLY 1.4% of white Americans owned slaves!!!!" as if that number alludes to how uncommon it was.

Any intelligent person would know right off the bat that women weren't land owners and slaves were expensive. The more intelligent statistic would be what percent of white families owned slaves, and what percent of white families that didn't own slaves, wanted to accumulate wealth in order to one day own slaves?
