I think you are dead wrong. First year of college playoff

Final four game. Kentucky vs Wisconsin. 28.3 million viewers

Final four football. Ohio state vs alabama. 27.2 million viewers. Same year

The country cares more than you think about cbb. Unless there is some electoral college ratings bullshite. There were more viewers for a basketball game than blue blood football teams in the first playoff game ever.

Be that as it may be. The tv money from a basketball team is peanuts compared to tv football money.Basketball and wrestling tend to be more popular in cold weather states because they are indoor sports. I bet the ratings in the South were better for the football game especially in Alabama and South Carolina. Basketball was much more of a priority in the 80's and 90's, but tv contracts for football skyrocketed these last 30 years and now dwarves basketball revenue for the power 5 conferences. It is still profitable. It's just a smaller piece of the whole pie lately. If the South was to make basketball as high of a priority as Kentucky and many other states do, then I am sure the conference would improve. As a whole we are just much more of a football culture, and it shows in the product we put on the court these days.

Football dwarves basketball at almost every school. If it didn't, the Big East wouldn't have fallen apart.
