That's true, but doesn't explain how Smart would "know it was coming" and choose to "rep it hard all week."

Well, if you know a trick play is in the bag and your RIVAL hasn't used it yet, I think it's a safe assumption that the trick is coming.

Also, as already said, GT doesn't use a ton of plays. Understanding how to defend the triple option is less about each individual way it is run and more about the concepts of discipline and just doing your job on every play. As such, a play like a throwback stands out as an outlier that needs to be worked on over and over, as opposed to working on whether the option is going left or right.
