It could be said that Alabama ruined the prestige of Conference Champions. Those 2011 Bama / LSU teams were both really good and if they played best of 3 who knows who would have won. By Bama getting a mulligan, they set the precedent for Conference Championships being meaningless.

The entire reason Bama got a mulligan was because the Big 12 didn't actually have a conference championship. If Oklahoma State had that extra win against a quality opponent, there's no doubt in my mind it would have been OSU vs. LSU. The Big 12 screwed Oklahoma State, and if the argument is two teams that didn't win a conference championship game getting in the NC game, I'm going with the team who lost to the team that's 13–0, instead of the team who lost to a 6–6 team.

In my mind, 2011 made it clear we need a playoff, but it was also the year when the BCS worked the best. The best two teams in the country got to play each other in the NC game, and that was the entire idea of the BCS when the plan was hatched in the mid 90's.
