He and Saban didn't get along. Applewhite was too young and inexperienced.

I think it was a work ethic thing. You can't be half steppin around Saban.

And yet took John Chavis to the woodshed one bright October day, just hours after learning two of his starting OL plus Glenn Coffee had been suspended.

Pretty much what I heard. Wasn't Applewhite's decision obviously, but after the country club atmosphere in Austin, Major was more than happy to move on.

Saban doesn't seem like he would have time for a greenhorn (pun intended?) that can't keep up.
