Has that ever not been the case? It's not like I can waltz into a Catholic church and demand they marry me despite the fact I'm not Catholic.

I think there have been a few gay couples denied service. In just saying that it should be left up to the church without the government intervening. If they want to marry gay couples fine, if they don't that's fine too.
