I do disagree. Watson makes up for a lot of talent differential. Swinney is a good coach, but not better than Meyer or Saban.

Based upon what? Sinney does as much with a LOT less talent. there have been some absolutely GREAT QB's that have no won national Championships...or even played for one. Clemson is a lot more than just Watson. Alabama and Ohio State are 3 deep with 4 and 5 star talent. We have out recruited Clemson every single year, yet they are on the same level as Alabama and Ohio State. (Right now)

They have Deshaun Watson.

Stanford had Andrew Luck and didn't play for the National Championship. I understand that QB is a key position, but they are not on the same planet at almost any other position. And depth wise? Nope.

Our class of 2013 was never particularly talented, and the most talented guys were frickups, basically without exception. It also included over 30 signees, so it's taken up way too much of our roster.

Agreed.

None of those things apply to their senior group. Theirs was a small group so ranked about the same as ours overall, but most contributed early and have continued to throughout their careers.

Agreed again.

IMO, most college coaches at this level can reasonably develop players. They wouldn't get to this point if that weren't the case. For example, Muschamp failed at UF, but his defensive players tore it up and continue to. Muschamp's mistake was in hiring an OC that he didn't trust.

Still no argument.

The difference with the Meyers and Sabans of the world, imo, isn't the ability to get guys motivated, teaching technique, or x's and o's. Most college staffs can do that. It's about getting players and running the program with high expectations. Time will tell on Smart.

You are changing the point of what iam talking about. I am not slamming Smart, at all. All I said is that Dabo is a very good coach. He has rarely had a top 10 recruiting class, and yet he played for the National Championship last year, and will probably play for one again...or at least be in the playoffs. If you don't have the facilities, the fan base, the talent, the tradition, the money of the best two programs in college football, but you are getting the same on field results, what do you attribute it to? 1 player?
I realize Clemson won't be on the same level when Watson leaves, probably, next year....but they will still be better than their recruiting should allow.

Clemson is closer than you think on the talent part, at least on the field. Maybe Dabo's genius is evaluation. That's speculation on my part. The NFL is all over their guys.

He also hasn't done as much as Meyer and Saban have, but that's beside the point.

Those Stanford teams don't compare with Clemson, talent-wise. Luck was there relatively early in their run.

I think they'll likely fall back to about where their recruiting is, but we'll see.
