Mayor of Gainesville signs declaration of emergency

This afternoon, Mayor Lauren Poe signed a declaration of emergency for the City of Gainesville which will go into effect at 6 p.m. today. This enables city staff to fully utilize all resources necessary to keep the public safe. Public safety officials are asking the public to stay off the roads when the storm near, if possible. This will allow emergency vehicles to respond to the highest priority needs first.
Please note the following regarding the hurricane or hurricane preparation:
-The 311 Rumor Control phone number is now active. Please use it to verify the most up to the minute information on Hurricane Matthew. For life threatening emergencies call 911. For emergencies that are not life threatening, call 352-955-1818.
-No shelters are currently open.
-City offices will be closed Friday, Oct. 7.
-Alachua County schools are closed Friday, Oct. 7.
-RTS buses will continue to run until winds reach a sustained wind speed of 35 MPH.

So, as of now the LSU team and it's equipment buses will have a total of 12 hours to make the drive into Gainesville and get prepared for the game at noon.
