generally speaking, it's a class C misdemeanor in TN, $500 fine or a class A if it was in an area open to the public

For convicted felons or when used in the commission of a violent crime, it's a Class E felony

so, okay

so if he's not a felon then basically he's going to be fined for not filling out paper work? Does he lose the gun?

I know nothing of guns

Doesn't matter if it is in your car (and within reach) you've got to have a permit.

And yes, it is a stupid law. The legislature has introduced bills to match our surrounding states for years but they die because the Sheriff's association fights them. The revenue from pistol permits go to the county sheriff - and many make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year off them. Most of that would dry up if you didn't need a permit to carry in your vehicle and the sheriff's know it.

its getting better. We changed up a LOT of laws a couple years ago and next year looks to hold some more changes, for the better. We are actually a lot better than most states but admittedly, Louisiana has some of the best gun laws in the country. Next year as have a law coming up for vote that should put us in good shape.
