Anyone who didn't see something like this coming for a first year coach (with no Oline, no reliable receivers, no kicking game, etc) against what is a very seasoned Ole Miss team was just being foolish.
"But, but, but, but.....we hired Kirby to win the BIG games!"
It's year ONE. Big picture, motherfrickers.
The big picture is that we do not have SEC caliber talent and unless we out recruit the rest of the conference, something we have never done, Smart ain't no more the answer than Goff, Donnan or Richt. Smart knew he had zero talent......and doesn't have an answer for Nichols State......losing big to Ole Miss is no big deal....they could well be the best team in the nation.....but Nichols and Mizzoo ain't even close to a SEC team.....and we should have lost to both. Smart needed to do better than expected to improve confidence.....he thus far has done worse than expected....not promising and not a good way to buy time.....

You're absolutely right. And Smart is already ahead of where CMR's classes were for 2017. Hell, any receiver that watched today and last week has to be licking their chops at the playing time sitting in front of them if they come here. So how do you figure he won't get it done?

but Nichols
Okay. Bama had ULL. They also LOST that one. At HOME. LATE in the season (that matters).

Mizzoo
C'mon. Let's quit acting like they aren't an SEC team. They ABSOLUTELY are an SEC team. Time to move on. They had the best Dline we may face all season, so this argument is silly.

But, we didn't. Did I mention Bama lost to ULL in year one under Saban?

Smart needed to do better than expected to improve confidence
Why? So we're admitting that we wanted to inflate our originally reasonable expectations?
quote:
he thus far has done worse than expected
Mizzou was one of the 4 likely losses on the year. We won that one, which put us ahead of the curve. Ole Miss, most expected us to lose. After seeing our deficiencies early in the season, most figured it would be a big loss. I'd say we're still ahead of where we thought, if we were truly being reasonable.

You wanna go ahead and fire him? Seriously? Does he NEED to "buy time"? Again, being reasonable, we KNEW he needed time from the start.
Let's start trying to be remotely realistic.
