Yes, but Miami was at the pinnacle of college football. They were almost unanimously #1 during the season. In 1992, Miami had not just won a couple of recent national championships, but they finished in the top 3 EVERY YEAR since 1986. They had lost FIVE games in six seasons.
Of course the 93 Sugar Bowl didn't "kill" their program like the NCAA killed SMU, but if you look at how dominant they were and how deflated they were after, it's pretty remarkable. They finished top 3 every year for six years, then after that game they didn't finish in the top 3 again for the next six years...and while they did have a short resurgence where they won a national title and almost won another, you have never seen the swagger since then. If anyone wasn't alive at the time and following football, it's hard to explain it to them. I HATED Miami more than I've ever hated a program (and truth be told that even included auburn), and that game will forever be my favorite football game in history.

This is so accurate it's painful.
Miami went into that game having read their own bylines, about how Alabama shouldn't even be on the same field as them.
A 21-point demolishing, thanks to a defense that did things to the Miami offense that would be considered illegal in 41 states and Puerto Rico, and Miami and their fans were a fading memory. One brief burst right at the turn of the century, then... nada.
