I'm still intoxicated and stewing in pity. Here's a depressing thought:

We joined the SEC in arguably the second best era of our football program, and Georgia has still beaten us 4 out of 5 times.

You have no idea how good Georgia is, and we've max efforted them more than we haven't.

This program is close.

But then we've always been close.

I like Barry Odom. I'm liking him more the more I see. This loss was on him, and he knows that. But I don't think he's Pinkel-level stubborn. I think he'll learn from it. We are further along than I expected to be, and I think we pull an upset or two this season.

I mean, we're top 15 all time program. Is it really that big of a deal?

And most of them have been nailbiters.

I mean, I fully recognize that Georgia is on a higher level as a program than we are. But shite I'd like to beat them more than once in 5 tries. That's mediocrity.

Like I said, I don't expect us to be .500 against Georgia, but I'd also like to think we should be better than .200 as well.

You're 100% correct. Georgia is big time.

We've become spoiled because this league is so good.

Back in the day if we'd have given OU fits at home like this we'd have been head over heels.

UGA is OU. Just in a tougher conference.

We've run with them most of the time.

Gives you guys perspective of where we were versus where we're headed.

The SEC is no joke.

If we were blowing you guys out I could understand 3 of the five have been tight and you blew us out once.

I mean I guess I get that it's been fairly competitive. But still, I'm so fricking tired of Mizzou coming up short. It's all this university has ever done in just about everything.

I expect some great games between Georgia and Mizzou in the coming years. I'm already pretty much over the loss. I didn't expect to win - got my hopes up, because apparently we are further along than I expected, and we had a great shot. Georgia was lucky to escape with the W tonight.

Mizzou has to get used to winning, and expect to win. I think that's a huge difference between us and the original SEC bluebloods. They expect to win, always. We don't. We're still new in the conference, and most of us remember when our program was a joke. This is mental. When you expect to win, you play calmer, and choke less. After seeing the progression in just 3 games, I'm optimistic that Barry can get us there. It's just tough in this conference.

Wouldn't go back for anything though.

I definitely lack some of the perspective of older Mizzou fans that saw us when we were truly worthless. I grew up during the Pinkel era. I have always watched Mizzou be competitive and that's what I expect from them all the time. Older Mizzou fans would say I've been "spoiled" by that, but I say that's bullshite. Alabama fans are spoiled. Ohio State fans are spoiled. How could I be "spoiled" by a program that can't even win a gosh damn conference championship, let alone national championship. Mizzou has NEVER spoiled me. They've consistently teased me right up to the edge and then left me with blue balls (so to speak).

Sorry if I wasn't around for the days of true suck in the 80's and 90's, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a program that can win a gosh damn conference championship more than every 50 years. The longer Mizzou fans keep celebrating "competitiveness" and lousy bowl games, the longer we will stay mediocre.

Mizzou is the only FBS school in a state of over 6 million people. We have 2 major league metros in state. We have all the resources you could want, and still toil in our own mediocrity. Mizzou needs to buck the frick up and start demanding better. I'm tired of our university being a damn milquetoast.

I truly hope Barry Odom will change the mediocrity-embracing culture of not only Mizzou football, but our university and state as a whole. WE CAN DO BETTER.

Funny that you posted this while I was typing my last post, and you said almost the exact same thing.

Mizzou is stuck in a mediocrity mindset still, and that needs to change immediately. We have too many resources and advantages to be a mediocre school. We don't have to be great or elite, but we should be at least "good" instead of mediocre.

Like I said - it's mental. The only thing that can change it is time. Honestly, the fact that we've all been bitching about the defense is a great sign IMO. We have gotten used to seeing an aggressive, ferocious defense that lived for pressure and gave other teams fits. We've bitched because we weren't living up to that expectation. I think we can get there.

We need some swag. And we need some recruiting hype. And a bagman.

I agree with everything you said, and I hope you're right about us being able to get there. I think the biggest obstacle has always been that Mizzou is in the backseat to the Cardinals and to some extent the Chiefs, and for that reason our fans don't really demand much of Mizzou as long as the pro teams are winning. Mizzou is just kind of an "extra" to a lot of people in Missouri, and that mentality has long long held us back.

Lots of gosh darns there brother.

Being a Mizzou fan has evolved, more than you'll ever understand.

I want the fans like you, because the fans like me are saddled with history.

I need you to tell me to expect more.

I'll remind you that there were days darker than these.

Together we raise this program up. I don't hate you for being spoiled.

I relish in it.

BO is probably my last hope for what I used to dream of as a kid when OU was running us off the field.

I'm all in, I was in my dads garage in 1986 listening on KMOX, and I am now on my 60 inch tv in Southern California.

We all bleed black and gold.

I remember being a young child and remembering Mizzou pounding the frick out of Alabama in a bowl. Then Powers, Onofrio etc....then Bob Please pound me in the arse Stull, his staff and the whole team not knowing what down it was against Colorado.

That shows the football acumen of Mizzou at that time.

These days are better, but you're right, a championship is needed badly.

I ate my words last night when it comes to bitching about the defense. That run D was strong. If we can find a way to do that and still get consistent pressure it will be nasty.

We've lost the last two meetings against UGA by a combined of 4 points.

There is getting beat and then there is also being competitive in losses. No one likes to lose. Yeh maybe players can get used to losing but it's college. So players cycle through pretty fast. A lot of these players come from winning programs. So losing isn't in their blood. It's a young team right now. For a down season, they are much further ahead than anyone thought they'd be. Odom is also growing as a head coach. I like his fire on the sideline. I like his coordinators fire on the sideline also. I like the fact that the coordinators are ON the sideline and not in a booth. Face to face arse chewing. Nothing like it.

So I could understand the frustration if we were getting blown out of games and this team was playing like it was last year. But it's not. This team is making little mistakes. Correctable mistakes. Nothing major. The core of the team, the defensive line and offensive line is sound as hell. That's where it starts. Those are the two things that as we seen last year will kill a team if they are not playing well. They are a few corrections away from being very good. The athletes are there. It's a matter of experience and adjustments in practice and it'll be there.

I'm excited and it's got nothing to do with moral victories or settling for mediocrity.

In the 1st half, I saw a Missouri offense that was the worst in any of our lifetimes in 2015, transformed and completely SHRED the Georgia defense of Nick Saban's prized defensive coordinator in just their third game in a new system.

I also saw a Mizzou defense undergoing a system wide change in philosophy hold arguably the best running back in division in check, again in just their third game together in a new system. And despite the clear shortcomings of the secondary, Mizzou was a couple of ill-advised passes away from knocking of the 16th ranked team in the country.

This on the heels of a shite show season, in a shite show year, in what is currently seen as a shite show state and shite show university that could only land an in-house hire.

I can understand your depression following a crushing last-minute loss, but I see the arrows pointing up, corrections being made, and Mizzou reestablishing the base Pinkel built quickly. Hopefully the championships will follow.
