TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama senior linebacker Reuben Foster was named one of five finalists for the Butkus Award on Monday morning.

The Butkus Award is given annually to the nation’s top linebacker. Foster joined LSU’s Kendall Beckwith, Vanderbilt’s Zach Cunningham, Florida’s Jarrad Davis and Iowa’s Josey Jewell as finalists.

The signal-caller of the Crimson Tide linebacking corps, Foster has put together an impressive senior campaign, helping to lead one of the nation’s top-ranked defenses. He has collected a team-high 75 tackles while adding 9.0 tackles for loss (-39 yards) and two sacks (-18 yards). The Auburn, Ala., native has totaled three quarterback hurries and a pair of pass breakups for the season.

This year’s winner will be selected by an independent panel of recruiters, scouts, coaches and journalists and will be officially announced on or by Dec. 6.

The award recognizes linebackers at three levels of competition while helping spread the word about Butkus’ ‘I Play Clean’ initiative which encourages teens to eat well, train hard, and play with attitude instead of resorting to steroids and performance-enhancing drugs.

Alabama has had three players previously win the Butkus Award, including Derrick Thomas (1988), Rolando McClain (2009) and C.J. Mosley (2013). Last season, Reggie Ragland was named as a finalist for the Crimson Tide.

Offense: B

Alabama never really found a rhythm offensively. The Crimson Tide gained 332 yards of offense and scored 31 points, but things never seemed to click.

It didn’t help that Alabama was without ArDarius Stewart because of disciplinary reasons.

The lone bright spot from the passing game was Jalen Hurts connecting with Calvin Ridley.

Ridley finished the day with 7 catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. Hurts wound up 15 of 21 for 136 yards and 3 touchdowns. Two of Hurts touchdowns went to senior Gehrig Dieter.

Defense: A

Alabama gave up the field goal early, but that was all Chattanooga got on the night.

After the win over Chattanooga, the Alabama defense has not allowed a touchdown in the last 207 minutes and 54 seconds of game action, dating back to the third quarter of the Texas A&M game (Oct. 22).

Alabama’s 31-3 win over Chattanooga marked the 65th time the Crimson Tide have held an opponent to 10 points or fewer under head coach Nick Saban since the start of the 2007 season and the eighth time in 2016.

Chattanooga’s 184 yards in total offense marks the 42nd time during Saban’s last 121 games (since the start of the 2008 season) that the Crimson Tide defense has held the opposing offense to fewer than 200 yards of total offense.

Special teams: A

Punter JK Scott had another big day booting the ball and flipping the field. He’s one of the best in the country.

Adam Griffith now has 93 points in 2016 (14 field goals, 51 PATs) to give him 321 career points (49 FGs, 171 PATs), good for fourth place on the school’s career scoring list. He’s now 5 points shy of third-place Michael Proctor, who had 65 field goals and 131 PATs from 1992-95. Griffith also ranks fourth on Alabama’s all-time kick-scoring list just behind Proctor.

Coaching: B

Defensively, Alabama’s coaching staff had the players in the right position outside of that first drive. Chattanooga moved the ball a little the rest of the game, but the Mocs never seriously threatened to score after that.

Offensively, Alabama wanted to get the passing game, but that never worked out. Also, Alabama let Hurts run too often. It didn’t matter in the long run, but Hurts can’t keep taking those types of hits. Someone from the coaching staff needs to tell Saban that if they haven’t already.

Overall: B

This was the perfect “teaching moment” game for Saban and the coaching staff. Alabama won easily but struggled, which gives the coaching staff a lot of things to harp on during Iron Bowl prep.

Like it or not, it’s tough for players to get up emotionally for every single game, and these are the types of contests Alabama doesn’t always look its best.

Alabama will improve this week and be ready for Auburn in the Iron Bowl.
