Honest question.

What else were they going to do with him?

Especially with the injury he just went through?

Could they have cut him? I've never seen a player in that situation happen.

IF they had not put him on IR, then technically they could have sent him to injured-waivers, and if nobody claimed him, he would've defaulted back to them and they couldn've cut him. He would then have the opportunity to go for a settlement, since the injury was team/game related, and he would've got some $ anyways.

However, this IR path is the best possible outcome he could've had with this injury. IR is a limited count/roster for each team. If they put the IR tag on him, it means they're thinking about him coming back this season and/or for a longer term. Basically it shows that they're putting up $ to keep him under contract.
