Article is a Q&A with Brad Biggs, who is the Chicago Tribune reporter who covers the Bears. Basically, Shaw is the better option to keep as a backup QB, but they've already invested a lot in Hoyer.
- If they Keep Hoyer and cut Shaw, they have to pay Hoyer $2M total ($1.25M more than he has if he would be cut) and Shaw can be waived or go to the practice squad at no penalty.
- If they Keep Shaw and cut Hoyer, Hoyer gets $250K (they already gave him $500K) and they have to pay Shaw $450K. So $700K all in.
- So actually, it appears that Shaw is the better value. He's performing better than Hoyer in the preseason camp and games. If the Bears are willing to just write off the $500K they already gave him, b/c there's nothing they can do to change that signing bonus, then this seems like an easy decision.

After watching Brian Hoyer through two games, I think he is truly broken after last year's playoff implosion. Could he be cut? — @steveoatms
The team could release Hoyer before the season, but it would come at a cost. The Bears signed the veteran to a $2 million, one-year contract, and he received a $500,000 signing bonus guaranteeing $250,000 of his $1.5 million base salary. So Hoyer would get a $750,000 parting gift from the organization if he were cut. Hoyer has not looked good in exhibition games, which is a little disappointing given his familiarity with offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and the playbook. Would Hoyer look better playing with the starters? No question. He looked pretty sharp in practice Tuesday at Halas Hall, and hopefully for the team that carries over into Saturday’s exhibition game against the Chiefs

I hope Connor Shaw gets more of a chance. I believe he's a better fit than Brian Hoyer. More mobile. What are your thoughts? — @hal_reid
No question Shaw is more mobile than Hoyer, and a lot of football folks will tell you good mobility is a quality they seek in a No. 2 quarterback. The offense isn’t going to run as smoothly with the backup running the show, and when plays break down, a quarterback with the ability to make plays with his legs becomes an asset. Shaw has an idea of what offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains wants to do. Keep in mind: A lot of the players Shaw has made plays against in the two exhibition games will be out of work soon — cuts are coming. Hoyer has a clear edge in experience, and the Bears have some money invested in him.

Connor Shaw deserves a team that could use him.

Seriously hope he gets a spot on the squad. I don't know of another player that deserves it more.

He's most likely done for the season at minimum after today

Heard he got injured. It was that bad?

It was pretty bad. Not Theisman level bad, but his leg looked like it crumbled. They're not showing replays of it. Just saw on Twitter.

He broke his leg right above the ankle. no ligament damage that they can tell about. He could still play later this season, but this sucks. He was 5/6 for 68 yds, 1 TD, and a 153 QB Rating. Also had 2 rushes for 15 yds. He had just about earned the back up job. Hoyer sucked going 8/17 for 70 yards and 0 pts. Shaw was about to get that job....frick, my heart breaks for the dude....

I saw the video ... it's all over twitter. Just gruesome.
The wife and I both texted him - she was crying about it. We've gotten to know him a little bit. He'll be at the Cockaboose again this year for sure now.

I'm not sure why that Chiefs guy went for him like that during a preseason game. Shaw already threw the ball.
This just sucks.

The Chiefs have been accused of playing dirty all offseason. I read that the guy who took down Shaw has been seen as a likely cut since last year, so I assume he really was trying to make a statement. That was a fine-worthy play and just total trash.
I know a lot of Bears fans who were super hyped about Shaw. Most wanted him over Hoyer at #2. Sucks so much.

It was a dirty play. He dragged from the top and fell on his leg. He was trying to fold him AFTER Shaw already threw the ball.
His name is Rakeem Nunez-Roche, he is from Southern Miss and originally from Belize.

Rakeem Nunez-Roche,
There should be a bounty on that motherfricker's head for this.

It really is tragic. Why does it always seem like the good ones, as in good people (Shaw/Lattimore) have such tragedy happen to them in this instance and shite heads like kaepernick prance through the damned daisies?

Heard from Connor just a little while ago. He's being placed on IR so that's really good new for his family and him. He's careful with his money already, but this is going to help a lot.

Rooster that's great to hear. preciate the news.

Big commitment from the Bears to him for doing this. IR is a llmited player pool, they can't put everybody on it. This signifies that they think he's the #2 QB, and they want to keep him in the organization. He's got a future ahead of him.

Great news about Connor! Wasn't sure what the Bears were gonna do with him. He deserves this because he clearly looked better than Hoyer when he was out there.

Honest question.
What else were they going to do with him?
Especially with the injury he just went through?
Could they have cut him? I've never seen a player in that situation happen.

IF they had not put him on IR, then technically they could have sent him to injured-waivers, and if nobody claimed him, he would've defaulted back to them and they couldn've cut him. He would then have the opportunity to go for a settlement, since the injury was team/game related, and he would've got some $ anyways.
However, this IR path is the best possible outcome he could've had with this injury. IR is a limited count/roster for each team. If they put the IR tag on him, it means they're thinking about him coming back this season and/or for a longer term. Basically it shows that they're putting up $ to keep him under contract.
Here is a great link that explains IR and what it entails.
