Yes the cop should be tried and have to face jail time just like any other regular citizen. Cops should never be above the law like some believe in here. I mean how many times have we heard examples of cops going off terrible intelligence only to harm/kill innocent citizens as a result.

As people said, everyone makes mistakes so that is why we have a system in place to help make sure to get things right. So you arrest the 'bad criminal', gather evidence, present your case to a judge/jury and let the courts decide. Every American has this right.

However if someone was caught in the act of doing some evil and vile grotesque act to some animal/child/etc, then I could see how some people wouldn't mind if the cop put them down right there. I would rather have these people serve a life sentence rotting away in jail, doing hard slave labor, as that would be more fitting punishment than the easy way out, a bullet. But then again I have a different view of our prison systems and think that the real criminals should be held there instead of being over filled with many non violent drug offenders mixed in w/ rapist, murders, etc. I also think the prison should do a much better job of rehabilitating people to rejoin society in a productive manner once released, but for those special SOBs who get these life sentences, they should be in much harsher and severe conditions.
