The University of Alabama athletic department has granted a full release to defensive back Maurice Smith, sources have confirmed to The Tuscaloosa News. Smith, who graduated from Alabama last Saturday, can contact any school including those within the SEC about a potential transfer with the release. The status of any possible transfer within the conference would depend on approval of a waiver by the Southeastern Conference office.

quote:

The SEC office had on Smith's specific case on Wednesday but did issue a statement in the waiver process. "The SEC does not comment on requests to waive SEC rules," the SEC release said. "As part of the SEC waiver process, a due diligence procedure ensures that pertinent information from the involved parties is gathered. This information is gathered for the purpose of a thoughtful and appropriate consideration of the particular facts associated with each case. The intent is for the waiver process to be handled in an efficient but deliberate manner, so the timeline for resolution of a waiver request varies with each unique situation. The SEC does not provide waivers of SEC rules absent circumstances that demonstrate a clear reason for granting an exception to those rules. Each waiver request is reviewed on a case by case basis."

Be a shame if it took 4 to 6 weeks to process and investigate it by the SEC office.

The guy, by his momma's interference, likely just killed his chances of getting drafted or invited for workouts by NFL teams next spring.

Hope the young man learned a small lesson in all of this. He should thank Coach Saban for everything.

Saban needs to grow a pair. Don't puss out after the damage is done. Your image was broken long before this particular incident.

UA handled this in about the worst way possible. Either hold to policy or don't. If you're going to cave, don't wait until the kid and his mom drag you through the mud.

it's extremely unusual for me to agree with a bama fan (on here) but I agree with you. there is a bona fide reason for the rule and anyone with any fricking sense should see that. it's not in the SEC's interest to have a lot of transfers every year from one member institution to another. LSU just lost a starting WR (granted his place on the depth chart had dropped) to TCU. he had graduated. but frick he shouldn't be on the fricking Arkansas team playing against us this year. that's bull crap.

Does any of that sound like the AD made the decision and not Saban?

So, he wasn't released until after he graduated.
Sounds like a non story to me.

This whole fiasco is awfully confusing, I don't understand why all of a sudden he is granted a full release after all this, but it would be awfully funny if he transfered to Georgia and was 3rd string
