It's funny that people fall in love with a neighborhood that is well-kept and organized, buy a house in the neighborhood, and then bitch about the HOA.

I think the wide-range of responses in this thread is a good example of the issue. Some HOAs are pretty strictly enforced (and over some stupid shite) and that doesn't always come across just by reviewing the bylaws before you buy. Especially if you're moving into an area you're not familiar with. Especially the ones noting the changes in enforcement with the change in HOA Presidents/Board Members.
And the reality is, in most metro areas unless you happen to live in an area that's old family farmland or without a close-knit neighborhood you're almost certainly going to have to build a new house in an neighborhood with an HOA.
