But, with some work, they have the footprint to land those sort of classes. They border a ton of states that produce solid talent and Kentucky itself produces a decent amount.

Geography isn't everything. Some of the top teams recently (Oregon, Michigan St.) have shite for local talent.

They can do it... but they need another Bryant.

I honestly don't think he would do that well in a modern era. At least not from scratch (aka without the reputation of a guy who won a pile of titleS).

FWIW, Kentucky probably missed the boat on any kind of NC contention for quite some time in not hiring Howard Schnellenberger.

For UK to be successful in the SEC, much less at a playoff level, they would need to make some serious inroads in Ohio. They've picked off a couple recruits up there that are Ohio State quality but they'd need to really dip in because the state of Kentucky itself isn't going to produce that much talent. I feel like they're at least trying to make adjustments to things in their control like facilities and coaching salaries to try to get back to consistent bowl status as they had under Rich Brooks.

Stoops had a pretty big mess to clean up while trying to maintain status quo in the SEC and learning on the job as an HC. If he gets UK back to a bowl this season then I have no problem giving him time. I'm not naive enough to think years of losing gets fixed overnight without putting a pretty big NCAA target on your back.

Oregon, thanks to Nike, dips into the rich recruiting ground of California. Michigan and the upper Midwest... as we know after Ohio State beat Alabama does produce enough talent to win a Natty.

The problem with the Michigan teams is that, again, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a university in the upper Midwest in a population that is declining.

Why be a second (though vital) stringer at Michigan State or CMU, EMU, WMU, when you can win a title at North Dakota State starting? There is talent there, but not enough to feed a system unless you have a great recruiter like Urban Meyer running the show.
