They had a huge referendum in the State in the early 2000's to change it. Had Jesse and Al whipping up a firestorm leading up to the vote.

I thought at the time that what killed it was the insinuation that yankee businesses would be reluctant to set up shop in Mississippi because of the flag. (And the people rejoiced.) It will change someday, but never, ever because of Northern influence.

Plus, the alternative was meh.

I have no recollection of Northern businessmen being at play I do know that most ignorant arse, lesser educated people in this state love to piss the rest of the country off for various reasons. I'm sure a lot of people voted to keep it just to say "frick you" to the rest of the nation. The Soviet Union is probably to blame more than anyone else. Without a common foe the entire country can hate and focus our anger at we begin to look inward and beat up each other. Mississippi is an easy target. So frick you Mikhail Gorbachev!
