I believe proximity and competitivity are the two most important ingredients in a college football rivalry. LSU had a rivalry with Tulane in the 20th century and lost it due to lack of competition.
LSU had a strong rivalry with Ole Miss until the 1970's when when we began to dominate them. The rivalry has been rekindled over the last 8 years since OM has been more competitive.
Alabama has been LSU's biggest rivalry since the 1970's IMO. Most Bama fans will not admit it but IMHO we have been their biggest rivals (aside from Auburn) since the 21st century began. They schedule their by-week before they play us and we have been their best competition. They hired Nick Saban. If Tennessee wasn't in the SEC they would be thinking of dropping them.
I predict that A&M will soon be our biggest rival because of the proximity and they have the resources.
