Grew up near Clemson in a Clemson family. When it came time for grad school, the program I wanted isn't offered at too many places and they don't take but about 3 kids per year. It's not super obscure mind you, but it isn't something that most schools have. So I cast a net and ended up at LSU.
I wouldn't say they're far reaching in culture. A lot of similarities, but some differences as well. Not having Cheerwine sucked, but boudin was a pretty damn good find. The biscuits suck in Baton Rouge, but they've got some really good french bread. You give something up, but you find something new.
I was born in baton Rouge , but grew up mostly in Georgia. Maybe to you the culture doesn't seem too far apart, but it certainly does to me. I also went back to baton Rouge for 3 and a half years as an adult and still have family there. I didn't care for it there, and can't stand Nawlins.

I guess it's more a matter of what you are used to and how well you adjust, though.
