My wife is from Finland. She was in grad school in Helsinki at the time. The Soviets were 'remiss' in informing their neighbors in a timely manner about what was going on. In my wife's home area in east central Finland, she remembers super-sized berries and vegetables in the first years after the catastrophe, as well as other odd things. Thyroid cancer stats are disproportionally high in eastern Finland to this day.
