Yea, that is really silly. SBNation did a series on every BCS year and basically found that there were only 2-3 years in which a playoff would have added a worthy 3rd or 4th team. Almost every year there were a clear #1 and/or #2 team.
It wasn't perfect, but it almost always crowned the correct champion.

It was a hell of a lot better than the poll system and it basically got it right.
