Final update for this thread. Got the ring in the mail about 3 weeks after ordering it (got it from James Allen online). It came in a nice package with its diamond certificate. It's very nice quality, looks just like it did on the website. The .46 carat diamond is perfect. Big enough to grab your attention but not over the top; modest and elegant. Don't let anyone tell you you need a .75 or 1 carat diamond. You can in fact get a very nice engagement ring for under $2k. Thanks to all who provided advice. I proposed and she said yes.

One more thing, if you order from James Allen, have it shipped to a location that's not your home if you live with your girlfriend. James Allen does not allow the recipient to tell Fedex to hold the package at a FedEx location.

Let this thread be a learning experience for you.
Once you are married, you will have this discussion over and over again.
You will ask "Why do I have to pay so much for X?"
X = a house in the right neighborhood, a private school, a new car for her, thousands of dollars in clothes she will never wear, your kids sports travel and activities, etc.
The key is to have your wife work to pay for all the extras herself. It's amazing how much more careful we spend when it's our own money. (Looking at you government)
I have avoid 99% of the chaos above by choosing a frugal wife who works just as hard as me.
Hope you are doing the same.

Congrats on the engagement. Hopefully your wedding planning won't be as painful as mine has been thus far
