That was indeed fuel to the fire. But I believe fans in general, certainly my feeling on it, is that post-season success trumps all.
1986 LSU Basketball. Barely made the tournament as an 11 seed. Not feeling a google, but wins were minimal. Got hot, made the final 4. I'd rather that by a mile over an undefeated regular season and 1 and done in the The Madness.
2011 LSU Football. LSU fans barely care that team was undefeated including wins over the teams that won the Rose/Orange/Sugar bowl. Because post-season success was a heart ripper.
Win total over time = tie-breaker talk, post-season success = have stuff to talk about.

Went 18-11 and 9-9 in the SEC, finished T5 in the league with Georgia.
Then went on an insane run beating #6 seed Purdue, #3 seed Memphis, #2 seed Georgia Tech and #1 seed Kentucky.
The Southeast Regional that year had Georgia Tech, Alabama, LSU and Kentucky at the Omni in Atlanta.
